McGuane's The Bushwhacked Piano is not a 1984 version. Sadly. Still on the hunt.
In September of 1984 Random House Editor Gary Fisketjon published the first seven titles of Vintage Contemporaries. Lorraine Louie designed the jackets. You can determine if a copy is one of the original 1984 versions by the list of the other six titles on the inner jacket. Also look for printed ISBN, original pricing and no checklist in the back. Of the original seven The Bushwhacked Piano is the hardest to find. This may be because the cover and design was changed early and it has gone through numerous printings with the updated jacket. The others can be hunted down for $10-$20 dollars. The real fun of collecting these is finding them at thrift stores and used bookstores but the fastest way is online. I did find my copy of Marshall at Goodwill for $3.99.
